This particular storm was fairly strong for McMurdo (where it is relatively sheltered), but only 25 miles away at the Satellite Station we get the equivalent of a cat 1 hurricane once a week in winter, and a cat 3 about once a month. Last winter we had peak winds of 222mph, only 9mph lower than the world record wind speed.
